Enhancing the International Competitiveness of Wisconsin Companies

    Partners

The Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) at the Wisconsin School of Business, Wisconsin Department of Commerce, Madison International Trade Association, and business executives representing a number of Wisconsin’s leading businesses who serve on the CIBER advisory board

    Challenge

Export sales are a critical ingredient for job growth in Wisconsin and the rest of the U.S. While some Wisconsin companies are already strong exporters, many have export-ready products but are not currently engaged in international trade, while others have ideas that could be developed into exportable products. Wisconsin companies must improve their ability to compete effectively in global markets, particularly in Brazil, China, and India. Companies with the largest U.S. exports to these emerging markets are well positioned to take advantage of these rapidly growing economies.

    Strategy

The Wisconsin Center for International Business Education and Research is part of a national network of 33 universities. It is funded by the U.S. Department of Education through a highly competitive grant program. The Wisconsin CIBER was awarded $1.5 million for 2010-2014.. This money supports development of educational programs to enhance the competitiveness of Wisconsin businesses in global markets. In 2010, the Wisconsin CIBER sponsored and organized 10 programs aimed at enhancing the global competitiveness of Wisconsin companies of varying size and industries, including:

    • “Expanding Your Business through Exports”
    • “Federal Resources for Increasing Profits through Export”
    •  Roundtable discussion of trade barriers in foreign markets with the U.S. Trade Representative, state government officials, and Wisconsin business executives
    • Two workshops on international distributor management held at technical colleges in northern and northeastern Wisconsin
    • “Strategies for Doing Business in India”
    • “Brazil: Business Opportunities for U.S. Companies”

      Outcomes

More than 400 individuals representing nearly 100 Wisconsin companies attended CIBER-sponsored business outreach programs held throughout the state. Participating companies included Harley-Davidson, Johnsonville Sausage, Promega, and Rockwell Automation.

In 2009, Wisconsin shipped more than $16.7 billion worth of products to other countries. That number is expected to rise for 2010 and beyond.
