Edward Marien

Ed Marien is professor emeritus of the transportation and logistics program for the Executive Education department within the School of Business at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW). He holds degrees from Indiana University (MBA) and Michigan State University (Ph.D., Marketing and Logistics).

His present instructional activities at the UW include a wide offering of non-credit, continuing educational courses for industry practitioners from manufacturers, distributors, retailers, carriers and third-party service providers in consumer and industrial market segments.

Ed has been employed directly in industry and consults extensively with industry professionals. He has consulted with organizations on supply chain/logistics/transportation, economics and business planning. He has assisted information technology firms in strategic planning and concept implementation. He has also assisted suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and carriers in negotiations, in operations improvement tactics, and in implementing supply chain management initiatives. He emphasizes the use of process improvement models along with practical tips and techniques for clients to build trading partner relationships.

John A. Gentle

John Gentle worked at Owens Corning for 35 years in various positions. In addition to pioneering their carrier Internet Web portal — considered by carriers and shippers as the industry’s premier administrative and tactical tool — John created unique methods for both reviewing and recognizing carrier performance and collaboratively seeking carrier input through his three carrier councils. He has been a speaker/panelist at a number of supply chain-related conferences. John is the past chairman of the Highway Committee of the National Industrial Transportation League (NITL), is a friend of the National Transportation Research Board (TRB) and has been designated a Distinguished Logistics Professional (DLP) by the American Society of Transportation and Logistics. John A. Gentle & Associates was formed immediately after his retirement from Owens Corning. The company provides consulting services for shippers and carriers.

Kurt A. Baumann

Kurt is a supply chain operations consultant. Inde’s consulting services include supply chain strategy, network design, warehousing productivity and transportation efficiency improvement, demand and supply planning, acquisition supply chain integration, and IT systems selection and implementation. Kurt has eighteen years of experience in industry and professional consulting.

He acquired his consulting skills from the Big 5, working as a Senior Consultant in Ernst & Young, LLP’s Supply Chain Practice (now Cap Gemini) and later as a Consulting Principal in Pricewaterhouse Coopers’ Supply Chain Practice (now IBM), providing both business process improvement and supply chain systems integration services to several Fortune 500 companies in the automotive, retail and industrial verticals. His improvement initiatives encompassed strategy, network optimization, process and organizational design, facilities layout, inventory and freight cost reduction and technology integration.

Kurt has a broad range of industry experience in global supply chain from demand planning through customer delivery with demonstrated capabilities in demand planning, inventory management, supplier collaboration, and transportation and warehouse operations. Prior to establishing Inde in 2004, Kurt lead programs for Manufacturing Strategy and Lean Enterprise at GE Healthcare within the Global Supply Chain organization. He worked closely with teams in India, Japan, France, China and Mexico to implement best practices, technology and performance measurement systems.

Kurt holds a Master’s degree in Supply Chain Management from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt by General Electric. Kurt serves as the President of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals — Milwaukee Roundtable. He is an instructor for UW Supply Chain Management Executive Education, and is a member of the Milwaukee World Trade Association. He speaks at educational seminars and trade events, such as CSCMP and Eye For Transport.
